Iheanacho: Leicester must sustain high standard

first_imgKelechi Iheanacho has stated that Leicester City must remain focused on their own philosophy of playing ahead of a four-game run-in at the end of the Premier League season.City face AFC Bournemouth on Sunday before tackling Sheffield United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United over a 14-day period. Brendan Rodgers’ men currently occupy fourth place in the top-flight standings as they look to secure the Club’s second-best finish in the Premier League era. However, there are still more objectives to be achieved for the Foxes and Iheanacho, who has scored 10 goals in all competitions this term, said the squad is fully focused.Iheanacho has scored twice in the Premier League since the restart.“It’s been great, I’ve really enjoyed it,” the Nigeria international said, discussing the return of football. “We worked hard in training before the restart on getting our fitness right.“It was a bit different because, normally when the season finishes, you come back after a holiday or travelling, but when you’re just inside for three months, it’s hard. “Now, we need to keep our standard high and keep the philosophy that we’ve had since the start of the season. We just need to finish these four games well.“It needs focus to get it done and dusted. We’re ready, we’re focused, and we’re trying to get there.”Iheanacho, 23, also reserved praise for manager Rodgers, who, since his arrival in 2019, has elevated Leicester into a side competing in the upper reaches of the Premier League table. The former Manchester City striker also believes the Northern Irishman has had a real impact on his own career and says it is a ‘joy’ to play under his management.“He’s a different class,” Iheanacho added. “He speaks to everyone and motivates and encourages them. He got me going, to be fair. “He got everyone going. Whenever I’m playing, I’m free to express myself, so long as I stick to the plan, and it’s just a joy to play under him.”Earlier this month, meanwhile, Jamie Vardy reached the 100-goal mark in the Premier League, joining an illustrious list of players to have also achieved that feat in previous years.Iheanacho admitted that playing alongside City’s No.9 helps him to advance his own development, while he also enjoys the camaraderie which he brings to the team.“Jamie is a top striker,” continued. “He’s one of the best in the Premier League, so congratulations to him. It’s been great working with him and I’ve learned a lot from him.RelatedPosts Ighalo: My best moment as ‘Red Devil’ EPL: Son fires four past Southampton Ings not interested in leaving Saints, Southampton manager says “Most importantly, he’s a great guy and he’s funny, so I’m happy learning from him.”Tags: Kelechi IheanachoPremier LeagueSheffield UnitedTottenham Hotspurlast_img read more

Sherwood sets sights on new players

first_imgTim Sherwood has given Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy a list of summer transfer targets as he continues to ignore speculation over his future. The former midfielder was named Andre Villas-Boas’ successor in December and enjoyed a fine start to life in the White Hart Lane hot-seat. Sherwood penned an 18-month deal as head coach but, with things recently going awry on the field, talk has increased that he will be replaced in the summer. “You’ve got to put them in with the right characters and the experienced players who want to give them boys the time to help them come on. That’s what I’ll be looking to do.” Sherwood was coy when asked whether he would look to buy back Steven Caulker from Cardiff after Spurs sold the England international last summer. He was, though, more forthcoming when it came to Tom Carroll and Jake Livermore, whose loan deals at QPR and Hull respectively end in the summer. “They’re both good players,” Sherwood said. “Jake’s had a good season at Hull and Tom Carroll is certainly one who will come back into the squad next season because he’s good enough for Tottenham.” Press Association Louis van Gaal, who is leaving the Netherlands manager post after the World Cup, is bookmakers’ favourite to come in – but Sherwood is not worried about such speculation and is already planning for next season. “I’ve given him (Levy) a list of players of who I want for next year,” Sherwood said. “You need to start looking, this is the time. The chairman’s got a list of the players who I would like. “There be a list of players and if you get one you don’t need to get the other. There are four or five are on there.” Sherwood strongly suggested those players have Premier League experience and sees such additions as key to blooding in Spurs’ young talent, who he knows well having formerly been the north London club’s technical co-ordinator. “I still believe you haven’t see a few of the young players we have,” he said. “No one’s seen them on the stage yet because it’s not been the right time to bring them in. Perhaps they’re not here, they might be on loan elsewhere. “They can only be as good as the experienced players around them because they will nurture them and bring them on. “I always say I’d never let my kids get babysat by someone who is going to teach them bad things. That’s exactly the same on the football field. last_img read more
