Photo: Prothom AloThe voting was suspended at two polling centres during Tuesday’s Khulna City Corporation elections following forceful stamping of ballot papers.The returning officer suspended voting at the Iqbalnagar Government Secondary School centre (meant for male voters) around 12:00 noon. A group of 20-25 youths entered the polling centre and started stamping the ballot papers at booth 7 around 10:30am.Kakoli Khan, the BNP polling agent at booth 7, and Sajeda Sultana, an agent for Jakia Sultana who is contesting for the post of a woman councillor in a reserved seat, alleged that all the men wore shirts that had a badge with the boat symbol.”They just came and asked the other candidates’ agents to leave. Then they took the ballot papers and sealed on the boat symbol, the Awami League-backed councillor’s pushcart symbol, and reserved seat councillor candidate’s glass symbol,” one of them said.Presiding officer Khalilur Rahman had to suspend voting afterwards. He said he had sought help from the police, but he could not confirm whether the police had taken any action.The policeman standing next to him said they had no such information. He did not have any badge, however. He said his name was Noyon Mia.Yunus Ali, the returning officer, said all the ballot papers had been seized.The same thing happened at the Ward Councillor’s Office centre around noon. A group of young men entered the centre and sealed on the boat symbol of AL candidate Asaduzzaman Rasel. They did so for half an hour till the police arrived.Alim Hossain, the presiding officer at the centre, claimed the miscreants could not drop the ballot papers finally and he suspended the voting around 2:00pm.
