Exit slip of the northbound #M1 is closed at 11:Luton due to an incident – long delays (16:41)— Total Travel South E (@Traffic_SouthE) September 22, 2016 Sixteen people have been detained after police received reports of immigrants in a lorry travelling on the M1.The vehicle was stopped on the motorway on Thursday afternoon shortly before 3pm.Police intercepted the vehicle near junction 11 for Dunstable, Bedfordshire.The lorry is reported to have begun its journey in Romania and was heading northwards from Essex. Credit:South Beds News Agency Bedfordshire Police said: “We were called at approximately 2.55pm by Hertfordshire Constabulary after receiving reports of immigrants in a lorry heading towards Bedfordshire on the M1 northbound.”A number of officers attended and detained 16 people after the lorry was stopped just before junction 11.”The ambulance service is in attendance and will be taking some people to hospital as a precaution before they are taken to custody.”A spokesman for the force told the BBC that the driver was Romanian, “so it may be those on baord came from Romania”. The group were assessed by the East of England Ambulance Service. They were said to be in a stable condition.A police helicopter was deployed to search the area for any more suspected illegal immigrants.The case will now be passed on to staff at the UK Border Agency.
