(Jan. 25, 2019)–The lone California-bred in the field, the Roncelli Family Trust’s homebred Streak of Luck relaxed well early and rallied four-wide at the top of the lane to take Friday’s $67,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by 1 ¼ lengths under Mike Smith. With trainer Matt Chew removing blinkers, Streak of Luck got a flat mile on turf in 1:34.94.“It was a team decision,” said Chew, when asked about the equipment change. “Mike had said that he thought she was a little keen in her last start and my assistant, Daryl (Bond) has been wanting me to take the blinkers off for a while now…Finally, we decided it was a good time to make the change. Mike said she was even breathing better today.”A 4-year-old grey daughter of Old Fashioned, out of the Elusive Quality mare Valeria, Streak of Luck, who was fifth in a one mile turf minor stakes on Dec. 26, was off at 2-1 in a field of six 4-year-old fillies and paid $6.60, $2.80 and $2.40.“I think this might have been one of her better efforts,” said Smith, who had been aboard in her last four starts, winning two of them. “There was more there when they came to her today.”Third two starts back in the Grade III Autumn Miss Stakes Oct. 27, Streak of Luck is now 16-5-2-2 overall. With the winner’s share of $52,260 ($12,060 of which came from the Cal-bred incentive fund), Streak of Luck now has earnings of $230,238.French-bred Love and Peace, who rallied from last for the place, had her chances somewhat compromised by the temporary inner rail being set at 30 feet. Ridden by Joe Talamo and trained by Neil Drysdale, she was off as the 3-2 favorite and paid $2.60 and $2.20 while finishing 1 ¼ lengths in front of Luminoso.Off at 4-1 with Geovanni Franco up, Luminoso paid $2.60 to show.Fractions on the race were 23.55, 46.92, 1:11.08 and 1:23.02.
