But Serhiy Leshchenko was anything but surprised. Chandeliers, marble, private zoo, car collection and airstrip on the bank of the Dnieper, he had already described all of that in detail and had drawn attention to the gulf between this wealth and the president’s official income. He had even investigated the origin of this money in depth. Leshchenko joined the independent news website Ukrainskaya Pravdain 2000, a few days before its founder, Georgi Gongadze was murdered. Microsoft to keep exploring TikTok deal after talks with Trump

first_img‘Bizarre’ Pappas promised Saturday to create 10,000 US jobs at TikTok over the next three years, in addition to the 1,500 current employees.”Don’t fall for this,” responded senior Trump aide Peter Navarro, a fierce China critic and a main architect of the trade war with Beijing.”China has hired a whole bunch of American lobbyists. They put a puppet CEO in charge of that company,” he told Fox News, referring to former Disney executive Kevin Mayer, who became the CEO of TikTok in May.On Friday evening Trump indicated he opposed a takeover of TikTok by an American company, a solution nevertheless agreed to by most of the involved parties, including ByteDance, according to The New York Times.”This is getting bizarre. A 100 percent sale to an American company… mitigates any reasonable data protection concerns,” tweeted Alex Stamos, a former Facebook head of security and a researcher at Stanford University.”If the White House kills this [sale] we know this isn’t about national security,” he added. Topics : ‘Biggest loser’ “The United States would be the biggest loser if it banned TikTok,” Daniel Castro, vice president of the think tank Information Technology & Innovation Foundation, said Saturday.”All of its data centers are outside of China, and there is no evidence that it presents a national security threat.”Trump said he would use an executive order to ban TikTok, or the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a law granting the president powers to regulate international trade in the face of an “unusual and extraordinary threat” from abroad to US foreign policy, national security or the economy. His threat has caused great concern for US TikTok users, particularly content creators who make money on the platform. Many of them have posted links to their Instagram or YouTube accounts so as not to lose followers if the platform is ultimately blocked. In its statement, Microsoft said it plans to “build on the experience TikTok users currently love, while adding world-class security, privacy, and digital safety protections.”Buying TikTok would give Microsoft a chance to break into the social networking market. The IT group currently owns the professional networking platform LinkedIn, and Teams, an internal messaging service for companies. The statement came after Trump on Friday said he would ban the app, which is especially popular with young audiences who create and watch its short-form videos and has an estimated one billion users worldwide.TikTok should be sold or blocked in the US, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told ABC earlier Sunday, while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Fox News the president would “take action in the coming days with respect to a broad array of national security risks that are presented by software connected to the Chinese Communist Party.”TikTok denies it could be a tool for Chinese intelligence, with its US general manager Vanessa Pappas declaring Saturday: “We’re not planning on going anywhere.” Microsoft announced Sunday it would continue talks to acquire the US operations of popular video-sharing app TikTok, after meeting with President Donald Trump who seemingly backed off his earlier threats to ban the Chinese-owned platform.”Following a conversation between Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and President Donald J Trump, Microsoft is prepared to continue discussions to explore a purchase of TikTok in the United States,” the company said in a statement, acknowledging the “importance of addressing the President’s concerns” over national security.Microsoft added that it would continue negotiations with ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, with the intention of “completing these discussions no later than September 15.”last_img read more

Mason City council approves another delay in Plymouth Road storm water project due to high bid

first_imgMASON CITY — The City Council in Mason City last night once again delayed awarding a contract for the Plymouth Road Storm Water Mitigation Project that addresses flooding concerns in that area. The council at their September 3rd meeting had to re-start the process of getting bids for the project after no bids were received. The project was originally scheduled to be completed by November 8th, but now city officials are eyeing a substantial completion date in March prior to the spring thaw and rains. The city received and opened a single bid last Tuesday from McKinness Excavating for $373,233, 58% over the engineer’s opinion of cost and 49% over the project budget. City Engineer Mark Rahm says that requires further review of the project. “I did not discuss it with the contractor at this point, since nothing has been approved or awarded. I’m meeting later this week with a couple of the engineers with WHKS, and we’re going to go back and look at some of the very first steps that we looked at in putting this project together.” Rahm says it’s possible to alter the project but still have the same results in addressing the flooding concerns in that area of the community.  “There are some other things that we could do possibly to make it more attractive and bring that price down, but it would require substantial changes in the design where I feel even with that, I don’t feel it will impact the endgame, what we’re looking for as far as mitigating that storm water up there.” Rahm says he will be back in front of the council at their meeting in two weeks with a recommendation on what to do with the project.  “We will be back on the 15th to do something, whether that be revising the plans and bid it again, or revise the bid and award it.”The council unanimously approved rescheduling the public hearing on the project for their October 15th meeting.last_img read more

Report: South Florida Lags in Applying Red Flag Law on Guns

first_imgOfficials in our state have taken away guns from 2,000 resident in the year and a half since the Red Flag Law went into effect. However, statistics reveal that much of the state has been slow to enact it.The law allows police to confiscate weapons from individuals who are likely to use them to harm themselves or others. Figures indicate that Broward County, which is inspired the law after last year’s mass shooting, has not been among the most aggressive in using it,  ranking 13th statewide.Meanwhile, Hillsborough (which includes Tampa) is 35th, Miami-Dade 39th, Palm Beach County 44th, and Orange County, which includes Orlando, comes in at 53rd on the list.In total, the Red Flag Law has been used 2,227 times between March 2018, when it took effect, and July of this year.Under the law, a police agency must seek a temporary risk protection order from a judge, in order to keep a gun owner from accessing weapons.Police are not required to seize the weapons. Instead, they may be placed with a family member or trusted friend, as long as the person on the order does not have access to them. After the temporary order is enforced, police can then decide whether to seek a final order, which would block the person’s access to guns for at least one year, unless it is renewed at that point.According to advocates, the law’s preemptive nature is critical. “States use these laws to disarm people who pose significant, credible threats,” says Patti Brigham, who serves as president of the Florida Chapter of the League of Women Voters, which is a founding member of the Florida Coalition to End Gun Violence.A background check is used to help identify someone who should not have weapons based on their past. Red flags, also known as “extreme risk protection orders,” are designed to identify people who could potentially pass a background check but seem at risk of using a gun in the near future. So far, nearly 97 percent of requested temporary orders and 99 percent of final orders have been granted statewide.Broward Chief Administrative Judge Jack Tuter says his county has handled about one case every weekday since the law was passed. There are three categories. The largest one includes people who are suffering “an acute mental health crisis,” such as suicidal people and those who are temporarily committed to receiving mental treatment under Florida’s Baker Act.Other cases include people who have already used a weapon or who have committed a criminal act. Those cases would involve removing the person’s access to the weapons, and would prevent them from purchasing a gun for as long as the order remains in effect, Tuter says. The third category including teenagers accused of threatening schools, as well as people whose behavior prompts a someone else to call the police.Tuter adds, “No one deprived of access to guns has gone on to commit any shooting. It served the purpose it was intended to serve: who is going to argue that a person with a mental health crisis shouldn’t have access to a weapon?”last_img read more

How LaLiga’s OTT platform is building a new global following

Powered by Firework In the next ten years, more than 50% of audiovisual revenue will arrive through over-the-top (OTT) streaming services. That’s the opinion of Jose Carlos Franco, managing director of LaLiga’s business intelligence and analytics department, who was presenting the competition’s international data strategy at the SportsPro OTT Summit in Madrid.Advertisement  Advertisement With such a dramatic shift in the broadcast landscape, rights holders will have to become experts in this new technology, which is why LaLiga became the first major football competition to develop its own OTT service, LaLigaSportsTV.Advertisement But doing so does not just represent a new platform to show live sport. As Franco explained, the world of OTT offers an enormous opportunity for data analysis, helping competitions to understand their fans better and build new followings across the world.“We ask two questions in our department. Who are our fans and how do they behave?” Franco said. “With our OTT platform, we are perfectly positioned to develop better knowledge of our users and how they consume sport, which can then be used to grow our audience.”LaLigaSportsTV is a multi-channel platform that was created to provide coverage of less-mainstream Spanish sports, rather than broadcast LaLiga matches. In its first year, the service has streamed 1,145 live events and provided on-demand coverage from 35 different sports across smartphone, tablet, PC and Smart TV environments. In this time, it has accumulated 410,000 registered users. To Franco, each of these users provides a unique data footprint that can help LaLiga to improve its offering. “We have designed dashboards that show the location of every user, how many times they use the app per week, which sports they follow, how long they watch and which device they use,” he explained, adding that all information is strictly anonymized.“By sharing this insight with our marketing teams, we can then send notifications or recommendations for a specific match, TV service or event. This has been very effective.” Part of a larger ecosystemCrucially, data from the OTT platform is combined with data from LaLiga’s many other digital platforms, including its website, mobile applications or games, in a single data lake. This allows for the team to analyses a much broader range of fan behaviors and use data-driven marketing to make a wider variety of relevant offers.“Analyzing all of our data sources together gives us a 360-degree view of the fan,” Franco added. “The sports you choose on the OTT service, the games you play on your mobile, the team you follow in LaLiga, all form a picture of what kind of content you want to receive. This multiplies the amount of relevant and timely offers we can make, which creates much more room for growth.”One of the new methods for making these offers is programmatic advertising. Using the fan data that has been accumulated, LaLiga produces new online articles, in partnership with a range of top media outlets, about topics that fans are showing an interest in.
